Remotely located between the aerodrome’s two runways, this plaque was a joint gift from the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and the Royal Greenwich Observatory (Herstmonceux). It was unveiled on behalf of the Observatory’s Director in the presence of military and civic dignitaries by Mr Humphry Smith, former head of the Time Department at the Observatory. During his long and distinguished career, Smith was also Chairman of the Directing Board of the Bureau International de l'Heure.
