Sponsored by Lampons estate agents, the Meridian Beacon, (complete with buried time-capsule) was erected alongside the Meridian Obelisk in time for the Millennium celebrations at the start of the year 2000. Its exposed position lead to its rapid demise. The hanging sponsorship banner, which had been damaged by the wind even before the beacon was first lit, was replaced with a fixed sign (compare the 1999 and 2005 image sets). By January 2005, the fire basket was missing. By January 2007, the commemorative plaque had come loose, and by June 2007, the beacon had been ‘felled’ to within a metre of the ground. By May 2009, supports had been erected on either side in preparation for the mounting of the graphic panel.
