This wall plaque along with the cast iron pavement mark beneath, both date from the tercentenary of the Royal Observatory in 1975. They are slightly out of alignment. Given how many roads in Lewes the Meridian crosses, why they were both placed together is a bit of a mystery, although it is possible that other identical marks may have been set up elsewhere and subsequently lost. The adjacent public house (109 Western Road) was renamed The Meridian in the year 2000.
