This mark, is one of just two recorded in the UK to been deliberately set up on the WGS84 Meridian. It was sited by Captain Malcolm Burwood an experienced yachtsman, diver and airline pilot based at the nearby Gatwick Airport. Described by the Danehill 2000 website as an obelisk, it was unveiled on 1 January 2000 by the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, Admiral Sir Lindsay Bryson. Inside, is a time capsule, which was sealed on 1 May 2000 in the presence of Lady Katherine Macmillan, daughter in law of the former Prime Minister who had lived a couple of miles to the north at Birch Grove.
The materials are all locally sourced. The bricks came from the Freshfield Lane Brickworks, and the slate from the obsolete kitchens of the old Greyhound Inn (now Infield). The time capsule contains amongst other things, a copy of the village’s Millennium Book, in which there are the names of nearly 600 parishioners along with associated photos.
