Greenwich Park was the main centre for the UK’s ‘Meridian Day’ celebrations in 1984. Following negotiations with the Royal Parks, it was agreed that the line of the Meridian would be marked across the park with paving slabs set into the ground on their edge. Although the path of the line is generally no longer visible, there are times when it manifests itself in the colour of the grass, which takes on a greener appearance in the immediate vicinity of the Line. Why this should be, is a matter of some speculation.
The level area through which the line runs was used for the equestrian events in the 2012 Olympics. Once they were over, the whole area was returfed. The green ‘grass line’ has not been observed since.
