‘The Prime Meridian traverses Trafalgar Road at about the corner of Trafalgar Grove and nobody cares a hoot’. (Punch, 14 December 1949) … and so it might seem today. In brief:
In May 1984, there was a temporary marking with 3M tape across the road for the London Marathon. Following that (in 1984?) the south pavement was marked with row of studs, one of which survived until 2012 when resurfacing work took place.
In 2006, plans were worked up by Greenwich Council for a mark on either side of the road (see 2006 image set). The site was surveyed, but the markings were not actioned. Although unmarked, the point in the road where the Meridian crosses was the ‘official starting point’ of the 2007 Tour de France. That event took place on 8 July.
