The upright metal structure on the wildlife jetty (more correctly known as Ordnance Jetty and shown on some maps as Airy’s Point) is known as the Needle Eye. The Meridian cuts the north-western edge of the Dome site and at the time of the millennium, was ‘marked with red light’ slipping into the River Thames and emerging to cross the jetty.
