Originally installed in 1992, this sculpture by David Jacobson is understood to have been removed (temporarily?) at the end of May 2018. Best viewed from above, it had a diameter of 50 metres and was given the name Meridian Metaphor. It incorporated 10 granite blocks salvaged from the old East India Docks. Designed as a place for people to congregate, it was a ritualistic representation of the planet, a key element of which, as originally conceived, was the water, which could be interpreted as representing the Earth’s oceans. Unfortunately, this feature was boarded over between 2008 and 2011. The last images sets to feature it were taken in 2008. In later years, the sculpture was marred further by the presence of a coffee van which intrude upon the space and seems to have become a semi-permanent installation. The 2006, 2007 and 2011 image sets contain several detailed photographs of the granite blocks, one of which is signed David J 91.
