One of a pair of similar sculptures known as Travel and Discovery. The two blocks, from which they are carved, came from the base of Rennie’s London Bridge, which was demolished in 1968. By 1982 at the latest, the uncarved blocks had been erected at either end of the Meridian Walk, which had been created in the Cornhill Meadows. In September 1993, Paula Haughney was commissioned to carve them. The stones were moved into the Abbey Gardens to be worked, and were reinstalled at the north and south end of the Meridian Walk, in 1994. Ideas for the imagery were suggested by the locality and the Meridian Line itself, with its association with time, distance, global connections and travel. Carved navigational instruments on a tomb in the Abbey Church also contributed to the overall design.
