The stone selected for this particular marking has proved to be of remarkably poor quality. As well as showing signs of extensive erosion on both its top and south facing surfaces, it has also split from top to bottom, presumably as a result of frost damage following water penetration. An attempt has been made to slow the rate of damage by plugging the crack with stone coloured mastic. The decision to mark the Meridian’s position with a stone may have been influenced by the milestones of similar appearance on nearby Ermine Street (Old North Road).
